Alex is a global procurement, supply chain and sales leader, with a track record of delivering bottom-line results through comprehensive business and process improvements, backed by extensive procurement, supply chain and commercial experience.
Alex is the chief procurement officer at DS Smith and part of the General Operating Council (GOC), setting the strategic direction for the company. DS Smith are a leading provider of corrugated packaging and are present in 37 countries, employing around 27,000 people. The firm does not just offer raw materials, packaging and recycling processes, but as packaging strategists considers a longer term strategy to create a more efficient packaging ecosystem. Alex’s key role is to transform the procurement and logistics operations inline with the expectations of a FTSE100 business.
Previously, Alex was CPO at Rexam, where he was responsible for global procurement, managing teams out of London, Rio, Chicago & Dubai. His final role at Rexam was as part of the leadership team of Divestco, tasked with selling $3.5bn worth of assets required to be sold by the EU and FTC following the acquisition of Rexam by Ball. Alex also spent seven years in procurement roles at both Toyota and GE.
Alex puts much of his success in procurement down to the six years he was responsible for the European sales team at Rexam, where he learned to understand things from the other side of the fence and developed the art of selling, which he believes a much underated skill in procurement. He is committed to driving the improvement of the profession, having previously been an elected member of CIPS congress.
Outside of work Alex and his wife Sharon volunteer at the Kings Arms Project providing hot food and drink for rough sleepers and those in need and acting as mentors on the Pathways to Work programme. His other passions are their three boys, two dogs, travelling, gardening, golf and Aston Villa.
